What Is Fire Cupping?

Fire cupping, also know as myofascial decompression therapy, is an ancient Eastern Medicine healing technique. Cupping originated with the use of animal horns and bamboo cups but has evolved to the use of glass cups in modern day. Although there are different types of cupping utilized, fire cupping incorporates the use of fire to create a negative pressure within the glass cup that is then applied to the skin. Fire cupping is a safe and effective technique with many benefits and has been used around the world for thousands of years.

What Are The Benefits Of Fire Cupping?

The negative pressure, or suction, which is created with fire cupping has become known for its many health benefits including: the relaxing of fascia, muscles and connective tissues, promoting increased blood flow circulation, the opening of lymphatic pathways to aid in the removal of toxins and the treatment of tension and pain. Cupping gain widespread attention in the 2016 Olympics when swimmer Michael Phelps displayed the hallmark purple marks that are temporarily caused by fire cupping. Since then, many other professional athletes have proudly displayed their cupping marks and embraced cupping for its healing and recovery properties. Fire cupping is unique from other types of modern cupping (which only create suction), in the subtle heating reaction caused by the fire.

Static vs. Dynamic Cupping

Static cupping is a form of cupping in which the cups are applied to your skin and left in place for several minutes at a time. They may be removed then re-applied in a nearby area but the effects and benefits are localized to the cupping location.

Dynamic cupping involves placing the cup and then gently gliding over your skin for a dynamic massage. Dynamic cupping is great for releasing tension and soft tissue restriction.
