Balance in geriatrics... Not to be taken lightly.

In the geriatric population, balance is not a topic to be taken lightly. Throughout life, balance is something that we often take for granted. Never taking a moment to stop and think about the many subtle sensory and motor processes that go on within our body to ensure we remain on our feet. Yet gradually experiencing a decline in our balance is a normal part of aging. It is not uncommon to gradually experience a decline in balance until one day a fall results. These falls in the geriatric population can often be traumatic resulting in severe injury to the head, arms or legs.

Fortunately with the proper treatment interventions, not only can a decline in one's balance be prevented; but these deficits can almost always be treated so that normal, standing balance is restored.
